1 to 2 tablespoons sliced pickled pepperoncini peppers
1/2 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
1 large tomato, halved, seeded, and chopped
1/4 pound sliced genoa salami, diced
1/4 pound sliced ham, diced
1/4 pound sliced prosciutto, diced
1/4 pound sliced roast turkey, diced
1/4 pound sliced provolone cheese, diced
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1-1/2 teaspoons dried basil
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 crusty loaf of Italian bread or 8 hoagie rolls, cut into pieces, for dipping
INSTRUCTIONS
In a large bowl, combine the mayonnaise, olive oil, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Add the chopped vegetables, meats, and cheeses. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serve with crusty bread.
Fun Fact
The “hoagie” is the preferred name for a particular style of sandwich in the Philadelphia area. Other regional names for this type of sandwich include submarine or sub, hero, Italian, grinder, and spunkie.
